AI in psychiatry: what it can do for your reports and letters
Reports, letters, follow-up, ChatGPT. What AI can do for a psychiatrist, what not to give it, and where to start.
Countries covered : France
In psychiatry, AI is mostly useful for writing. The consultation report, the letter to the GP, following a patient over several months. It can save time, as long as you know what it does well and what it cannot do.
What AI can do for you
The consultation report
During the consultation, a note-taking tool transcribes what is said, then writes the report. You no longer type while the patient talks. See our article on the psychiatric consultation report.
Letters
From the report, AI can draft the letter to the GP or a colleague. You review and sign it. See our article on the letter to the GP.
Following progress over time
When every consultation sits in the same record, you immediately see what has changed, including treatment, before seeing the patient again.
What about ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is useful for anything that contains no patient data. A general information sheet for patients, a description of your practice, preparing a talk.
Patient data, however, does not belong there. The consumer version is not certified to host health data. According to OpenAI's help centre, content from personal accounts may be used to train models unless you turn off the « Improve the model for everyone » setting. And no data processing agreement protects you.
Removing the name is not enough. Age, occupation, town or a life event often make someone recognisable. The details are in our article on ChatGPT and patient data, which applies to psychiatrists too.
Telling patients
Before using a note-taking tool, inform the patient. Explain simply how it works and ask whether they are comfortable with it. See our article on patient consent.
You remain responsible
The French National Authority for Health (HAS) and the data protection authority (CNIL) stress this point in their February 2026 working document on AI in care. The professional checks what the tool produces and compares it with their own clinical reasoning. Responsibility remains theirs.
Where to start
- Pick one use, the one that costs you the most time. For many psychiatrists, that is reports and letters.
- Choose a tool designed for health care, with certified hosting and a clear contract. Our article on choosing software sets out the criteria.
- Inform your patients before you start.
- Review everything the tool produces, especially at the beginning.
How Delta works
Delta is an AI assistant designed with psychiatrists. During the consultation, Delta transcribes what is said, then writes the report, taking your specialty into account. You can also dictate your observations right after. The report is added to the patient's record, so you find the whole history at the next consultation. Delta also writes your letters, for example to the patient's GP.
Delta does not handle prescriptions or billing. You keep your medical software for that.
Data stays in Europe, on infrastructure certified for health data (HDS), and AI processing runs on servers located in France. The patient's name and any information that could identify them are pseudonymised before reaching the AI, no audio file is kept, and the data is never used to train models. Delta works on computer, tablet and phone. More details on the Delta for psychiatrists page.
Will AI replace psychiatrists?
No. The interview, diagnosis, prescribing and the relationship with the patient cannot be delegated. AI lightens the writing.
Can I use ChatGPT to write a report or a letter?
Not if the text contains patient data. The consumer version is not certified for health data and no agreement protects you. A tool designed for health care is a better fit.
Can AI get a treatment wrong?
Yes. A drug name or a dose can be mistranscribed. Always reread that section before filing or sending the document.
Do I need to tell the patient?
Yes, if the consultation is transcribed. They must know the tool is being used and be able to say no.
