AMO billing for speech and language therapists in 2026: billing unit value, assessment coefficients, and what amendment 21 changes. Reference sheet to download.
Countries covered : France
Amendment 21 to the national agreement, which came into force on February 23, 2026, increased the value of the AMO billing unit and modified the assessment coefficients. This page summarises how billing is calculated, the billing unit value, the coefficients of the main assessments, and what amendment 21 changed.
The rates indicated are the conventional rates for metropolitan France. Always check the rates in force on ameli.fr before billing.
How billing is calculated
In speech and language therapy, the rate for a procedure is calculated simply: AMO coefficient × billing unit value. The coefficient (e.g., AMO 20, AMO 34.01) is set by the NGAP according to the procedure; the billing unit is the monetary value set by the agreement.
Assessment billing (initial rates, metropolitan France)
Assessments are prescribed by a doctor and result in a report. Main coefficients and initial rates:
- Prevention / parental guidance: AMO 20 (€52.00)
- Swallowing and velo-tubo-tympanic functions: AMO 26 (€67.60)
- Phonation (voice, fluency), AMO 33.98 (€88.35)
- Oral and written language (dyslexia, dysorthographia…), AMO 34.01 to 34.03 (≈ €88.43 to €88.48)
- Neurological disorders (aphasia, stroke, degenerative diseases), AMO 39.99 (€103.97)
- Disability (ASD, deafness, impairments), AMO 40.02 (€104.05)
The reassessment benefits from a 30% discount compared to the initial rate and must still be accompanied by a mandatory report.
Rehabilitation sessions
The duration of the session is linked to the billing code:
- AMO 9.7 / 9.8 / 9.9: sessions of approximately 30 minutes.
- AMO 15.4: sessions of approximately 45 minutes, which cannot be less than 30 minutes.
Travel and reimbursement
For a procedure performed at the patient's home, the speech and language therapist bills a flat-rate travel allowance (IFD) of €2.50, to which mileage allowances may be added according to NGAP conditions. Reimbursement by Health Insurance remains at 60% of the conventional rate.

What amendment 21 changes
- Increase of the billing unit to €2.60 in metropolitan France, with planned steps until 2027.
- Modified assessment coefficients to improve the traceability of speech and language therapy assessments.
- Abolition of the prior authorisation request (DAP) for renewals and series extensions.
- Two sessions on the same day are possible for the same patient, under strict conditions: different individual rehabilitation procedures, falling under two distinct projects, resulting from two distinct prescriptions or two distinct assessments.
- New flat-rate assistance rewarding participation in coordination meetings with educational teams in schools.
The report, a condition for billing
Billing an assessment requires a compliant report: this is what justifies the billed procedure and what will be requested in the event of a retrospective audit. Rather than writing each report from scratch, start from a fixed template and standardise your phrasing.
This is what Delta does: you capture your observations via live note-taking or post-session dictation, and the tool generates a structured report based on your template, ready to accompany the billing, with longitudinal patient memory from one assessment to another. HDS hosting, GDPR compliant.
Frequently asked questions
What is the value of the AMO billing unit in 2026?
In metropolitan France, the AMO billing unit is worth €2.60 since February 23, 2026, the date amendment 21 came into force. The rate for a procedure is obtained by multiplying the AMO coefficient by this value.
How is a speech and language therapy assessment billed?
Each type of assessment has an AMO coefficient set by the NGAP (e.g., AMO 20 for prevention, AMO 34.01 for oral and written language, AMO 39.99 for neurological). The rate is the coefficient multiplied by €2.60.
How much does a reassessment cost?
The reassessment is billed with a 30% discount compared to the initial assessment rate and requires a mandatory written report.
Is a prior authorisation request still required to bill a renewal?
No. Since amendment 21 (February 23, 2026), a prior authorisation request is no longer required for renewals or series extensions.
Can two sessions be billed on the same day for a patient?
Yes, under certain conditions: they must be different individual rehabilitation procedures, falling under two distinct rehabilitation projects, resulting from two distinct prescriptions or two distinct assessments.
