Reimbursement for a psychologist session: Mon soutien psy and supplementary health insurance

Outside of public institutions, psychologists practice with unregulated fees and their sessions are, by default, not reimbursed by the Assurance Maladie. The major exception is Mon soutien psy, which covers sessions at a regulated rate.

This page provides an update for 2026 on what is reimbursed, by whom, and how.

Mon soutien psy: the benchmark scheme

Mon soutien psy allows for the coverage of 12 sessions per calendar year with a contracted psychologist (directory of the scheme on ameli.fr). In 2026:

• Regulated rate: €50 per session, including the assessment session (the first session, which is longer, billed at the same rate).
• Breakdown: 60% Assurance Maladie, 40% supplementary health insurance. For a €50 follow-up session, this means €30 is covered by the Assurance Maladie and €20 by the supplementary health insurance. With a supplementary health insurance policy covering this portion, the out-of-pocket cost can be zero.
• Direct access: a prescription is no longer required to enter the scheme.
• Third-party payment: starting October 1, 2026, it can be applied to the Assurance Maladie portion, eliminating the need to advance these 60% for most patients.

Outside the scheme: unregulated fees

Outside of Mon soutien psy, a "classic" session with a private practice psychologist is not reimbursed by the Assurance Maladie. The rate is set freely, displayed, and results in an invoice. In this case, supplementary health insurance may step in.

The role of supplementary health insurance

More and more supplementary health insurance providers offer a "psychology" or "alternative medicine" package: an amount per session (often €20 to €60) up to a limit of a certain number of sessions per year, or an annual allowance. This package can supplement Mon soutien psy (the 40% portion) or fund sessions outside the scheme. To be checked on a case-by-case basis.

What about the public sector?

In a medico-psychological centre (CMP), psychological care is free of charge for the patient (public sector, upon referral). Waiting times can be long, but it is a path with no out-of-pocket costs, useful to mention for appropriate situations.

Informing your patients well

Practitioners benefit from clearly explaining the three paths: Mon soutien psy, supplementary health insurance, CMP, without committing to a specific amount, which depends on the contract and the situation. A legible invoice and, if applicable, the correct scheme membership number, are often enough to unlock reimbursement.
