AI in physiotherapy: what it can do for your notes and assessments
Session notes, assessments, ChatGPT. What AI can do for a physiotherapist, what not to give it, and where to start.
Countries covered : France
In physiotherapy, AI is mostly useful for writing. Notes between patients, assessments, exercise programmes. It can save time, as long as you know what it does well and what it cannot do.
What AI can do for you
Session notes
You dictate in a few seconds what you did and how the patient responded, and the tool turns it into a clean note. In a treatment room, it can also transcribe what is said during the session. The note is added to the patient's record. See our session notes template.
Assessments
From your observations and measurements, AI can write a first draft of the assessment or the end-of-treatment report. You review it, check every measurement and adjust. See our assessment template.
Exercise programmes
AI can format a home programme with simple instructions for the patient. You choose the exercises, it writes them up. See our exercise programme template.
Following progress over time
When every session sits in the same record, it becomes easy to see what has improved, such as pain or range of motion, before extending treatment.
What about ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is useful for anything that contains no patient data. A general advice sheet on back pain, a description of your practice, an email to a colleague about a general question.
Patient data, however, does not belong there. The consumer version is not certified to host health data. According to OpenAI's help centre, content from personal accounts may be used to train models unless you turn off the « Improve the model for everyone » setting. And no data processing agreement protects you.
Removing the name is not enough. Age, occupation, sport or the date of an operation often make someone recognisable. The details are in our article on ChatGPT and patient data, which applies to physiotherapists too.
Telling patients
If a tool transcribes what is said during the session, tell the patient first. Explain it simply and ask whether they are comfortable with it. See our article on patient consent.
You remain responsible
The French National Authority for Health (HAS) and the data protection authority (CNIL) stress this point in their February 2026 working document on AI in care. The professional checks what the tool produces and compares it with their own clinical reasoning. Responsibility remains theirs.
Where to start
- Pick one use, the one that costs you the most time. For many physiotherapists, that is end-of-day notes.
- Choose a tool designed for health care, with certified hosting and a clear contract. Our article on choosing software sets out the criteria.
- Start with dictation after each patient, it is the simplest.
- Review everything the tool produces, especially at the beginning.
How Delta works
Delta is an AI assistant designed with physiotherapists. You can dictate your observations in a few seconds after each patient, or let Delta transcribe what is said during the session. Delta then writes the session report, taking your specialty into account, and adds it to the patient's record. You can follow each patient's progress, session after session. Delta also writes your assessment reports.
Delta does not handle billing or insurance claims. You keep your billing software for that.
Data stays in Europe, on infrastructure certified for health data (HDS), and AI processing runs on servers located in France. The patient's name and any information that could identify them are pseudonymised before reaching the AI, no audio file is kept, and the data is never used to train models. Delta works on computer, tablet and phone. More details on the Delta for physiotherapists page.
Will AI replace physiotherapists?
No. Examination, diagnosis, hands-on techniques and the relationship with the patient cannot be delegated. AI lightens the writing and helps track a patient's progress.
Can I use ChatGPT to write a physiotherapy assessment?
Not if the text contains patient data. The consumer version is not certified for health data and no agreement protects you. A tool designed for health care is a better fit.
Does live transcription work in a gym area?
Poorly, because several patients' conversations get mixed up. In a gym area, dictation after each patient is more reliable.
Do I need to tell patients?
Yes, if the tool transcribes what is said during the session. A poster in your practice and a word at the first session are enough.
