Occupational therapy reimbursement: coverage and financial aid

For care procedures (assessments, rehabilitation, readjustment), occupational therapists work under medical prescription (art. R4331-1 of the French Public Health Code), but they are not covered by the statutory health insurance agreement (non-conventionnés): their private practice sessions are not reimbursed by French statutory health insurance (Assurance Maladie). Funding relies on supplementary health insurance (mutuelles), the MDPH, early intervention schemes, and, for home adaptation, MaPrimeAdapt'.

How much does an occupational therapy session cost

Fees are unregulated. In practice, a consultation or a session usually costs between €50 and €70, depending on the duration, the purpose (rehabilitation, readjustment, recommendations), and any home visits (indicative amounts). A longer assessment (bilan), with a report intended for an MDPH application, may cost more, which should be specified in the quote.

Why Assurance Maladie does not reimburse private practice

Available funding options

1. Supplementary health insurance (mutuelle). Annual allowance (often €150 to €300) or a cap per session (€25 to €50), up to a maximum number of sessions per year. Check your policy.
2. The MDPH and the PCH. The disability compensation benefit (PCH) funds five types of support: human assistance, technical aids, home or vehicle adaptation, specific or exceptional costs, and assistance animals. It does not fund rehabilitation sessions: the occupational therapy assessment mainly serves to justify technical aids and home adaptation. For a child, the AEEH and its supplements can help cover disability-related costs. The application is based on the assessment, a recent medical certificate, and a funding plan.
3. Early intervention schemes. For a child aged 0 to 12 with a suspected neurodevelopmental disorder, the early intervention package (forfait d'intervention précoce) can fund an occupational therapy assessment and sessions, on medical prescription, with a therapist contracted with a coordination and referral platform (PCO), with no upfront cost for the family.

A useful habit: provide a clear and dated assessment, a detailed quote, and direct them to the right resource (mutuelle, MDPH, MaPrimeAdapt' depending on the goal). The more readable and recent the report, the faster the process will go.
