Occupational therapy reimbursement: coverage and financial aid

Occupational therapists work under medical prescription (R4331-1), but they are not covered by the statutory health insurance agreement (non-conventionnés): their private practice sessions are not reimbursed by French statutory health insurance (Assurance Maladie). Funding relies on supplementary health insurance (mutuelles), the MDPH, early intervention schemes, and, for home adaptation, MaPrimeAdapt'.

How much does an occupational therapy session cost

Fees are unregulated. In practice, a consultation or a session usually costs between €50 and €70, depending on the duration, the purpose (rehabilitation, readjustment, recommendations), and any home visits. A longer assessment (bilan), with a report intended for an MDPH application, may cost more, which should be specified in the quote.

Why Assurance Maladie does not reimburse private practice

Available funding options

1. Supplementary health insurance (mutuelle). Annual allowance (often €150 to €300) or a cap per session (€25 to €50), up to a maximum number of sessions per year. Check your policy.
2. The MDPH and the PCH. The Disability Compensation Benefit (PCH) can cover rehabilitation care in the event of loss of autonomy; the AEEH is for children. The application is based on the assessment, a recent medical certificate, and a funding plan.
3. Early intervention schemes. Under the early intervention package (neurodevelopmental disorders, autism), an occupational therapy assessment costing around €140 can be covered through a coordination platform during the first year.

A useful habit: provide a clear and dated assessment, a detailed quote, and direct them to the right resource (mutuelle, MDPH, MaPrimeAdapt' depending on the goal). The more readable and recent the report, the faster the process will go.
