Psychomotor therapy in France: fees and funding options

Psychomotor therapists work on medical prescription, but sessions in private practice are not reimbursed by France's Assurance Maladie, the statutory health insurance system. Funding therefore comes through other routes: supplementary health insurance, the MDPH disability service, early intervention programmes or care in specialist services.

How much does a session or assessment cost?

Practitioners set their own fees. In practice:

• A session lasting about 40 minutes most often costs between €25 and €60, with an average of around €45.
• A full psychomotor assessment, including test administration and the written report, generally costs €110 to €250, depending on its duration and complexity.

These amounts vary by region and the format of care. The practitioner displays their fees and provides an invoice, which is essential when requesting reimbursement from supplementary health insurance.

Why Assurance Maladie does not reimburse private practice sessions

Available sources of financial support

1. Supplementary health insurance (mutuelle). Many policies offer an ‘alternative medicine’ allowance: a fixed amount per session, for example €50, for a limited number of sessions each year, or an annual allowance. Check the policy.
2. The MDPH. Where the condition is recognised as a disability, support may be awarded through the AEEH, the allowance for the education of a disabled child, or the PCH, the disability compensation benefit. These can contribute to care costs, including psychomotor therapy.
3. Early intervention programmes. Coordination and referral platforms (PCO) for neurodevelopmental disorders may fund assessments and interventions for young children following a medical referral.
