Software for neuropsychologists: how to choose
Scheduling, invoices, patient records, assessment reports. What software should do for a neuropsychologist in private practice, and the questions to ask before choosing.
Countries covered : France
A neuropsychological assessment means an interview, testing, scoring, a report and a feedback session. Alongside, there is scheduling, invoices and each patient's record. Few tools do all of it well. It helps to know what you need before choosing.
The four needs of a neuropsychology practice
- Scheduling. An assessment often spans several appointments, from the interview to the feedback session.
- Invoices. In France, private assessments are generally not covered by national health insurance, with some exceptions. See our article on assessment fees and reimbursement.
- Scoring. It goes through the tools designed for each test. Practice software does not replace it.
- The report. It is often the longest step of the assessment. See our article on how to structure the report and our WAIS and WISC report template.
How to choose
1. Where the data is hosted
Your records hold health data, often in great detail, covered by professional secrecy. Check where it is stored and which certification the host holds. In France, a provider hosting health data for you must be HDS certified (article L1111-8 of the Public Health Code). See our article on HDS hosting.
2. Help with writing
Check whether the tool actually helps you write the report from the interview, your observations and the results. A tool that only stores your documents does not save time.
3. Following progress over time
At a second assessment, you compare with the first. A good tool gives you the patient's full history at a glance.
4. Different readers
The same assessment is read by the family, the school or the doctor. Check that it is easy to adapt the text for each. See our article on school accommodations after an assessment.
5. The contract
You remain responsible for your patients' data. Under the GDPR, you need a data processing agreement with the provider (article 28). Also check that your data is not used to train models.
Questions to ask before you commit
- Where is the data hosted, and is the host certified for health data?
- Is my data used to train models?
- Does the tool help me write the report, or only store it?
- Can I get my records back if I stop?
- Can I try it without commitment?
How Delta works
Delta is an AI assistant designed with neuropsychologists. During the interview, Delta transcribes what is said, then writes the report, taking your specialty into account. You can also dictate your observations right after testing. The report is added to the patient's record, so you find the whole history when the time comes for a new assessment. Delta also writes your neuropsychological assessment reports.
Data stays in Europe, on infrastructure certified for health data (HDS), and AI processing runs on servers located in France. The patient's name and any information that could identify them are pseudonymised before reaching the AI, no audio file is kept, and the data is never used to train models. Delta works on computer, tablet and phone. More details on the Delta for neuropsychologists page.
What is the best software for a neuropsychologist?
There is no single answer. Most neuropsychologists combine test scoring tools with a tool for patient records and writing. The right choice depends on what takes up most of your time.
Does the software need health data certification?
If the provider hosts health data for you, it must meet the rules of your country. In France, that means HDS certification.
Can an AI tool score tests?
It cannot be relied on. Scoring goes through the tools designed for each test. AI then helps with writing, and you check every score in the report.
Do I need to tell the patient if the interview is transcribed?
Yes. Inform them and ask whether they are comfortable with it. See our article on patient consent.
