How much does a consultation cost in 2026

Fees are unregulated and vary depending on duration, reason, and location. In practice, the following ranges are observed:

• Initial consultation (often 45 min to 1 hour, complete clinical history): generally €50 to €70.
• Follow-up consultation (around 30 min): generally €35 to €55.
• In Paris and major cities, expect an average of €15 to €20 more than in other regions.

The overall observed range is around €35 to €90 depending on the format (office, home visit, teleconsultation) and the time spent. These amounts are indicative: each practitioner builds their own rate schedule based on their organisation and displays it visibly, in accordance with price information obligations.

What French statutory health insurance reimburses (or does not)

Outside of these cases, the consultation remains at the patient's expense, potentially covered by their supplementary health insurance (mutuelle).

The role of supplementary health insurance (mutuelle)

It is the supplementary health insurance that most often takes over, via an "alternative medicine" (médecines douces) or "wellness" package. The terms vary greatly from one contract to another:

• a fixed amount per consultation, frequently €20 to €60, up to a limit of a few sessions per year (often 2 to 5);
• or an annual allowance shared among several specialties.

Useful tip to give the patient: check with their supplementary health insurance for the exact package, the annual cap, and the required documents (itemized invoice, sometimes a prescription). A clear invoice speeds up reimbursement.

VAT and billing

Care provided within the scope of the healthcare profession is exempt from VAT (Art. 261-4-1° of the CGI): practitioners under the basic VAT exemption scheme (Art. 293 B of the CGI) do not add VAT to their fees.
