Microphone not detected

Check microphone permissions, reconnect your device and select the correct input before running an audio test.

Open the microphone test

On the session page, open Microphone in Session capture, then choose Test my microphone. If a session recording is in progress, finish it before testing, reconnecting devices or restarting Delta.

Read the message displayed: denied access, an empty device list and a microphone that cannot be opened need different checks.

Check microphone permissions

  • In a browser, allow microphone access for the Delta website in the browser's site permissions. Also check that your computer allows that browser to use the microphone.
  • In the desktop application, check the microphone permission for Delta in your computer's settings.
  • On macOS, open System Settings, then Privacy & Security and Microphone. Enable access for Delta or for the browser you use.
  • On Windows, find the microphone privacy settings in Settings. Enable microphone access and access for desktop apps. Desktop apps may not have an individual Delta switch.

In Delta, choose Allow microphone access if it is offered, then respond to any permission request. Depending on the platform, the request may appear when you start the test. Seeing a microphone in the list does not by itself confirm permission to record.

If access was denied, change the blocked permission first. Follow any request to reopen the application or browser, return to the test and use Try again when offered. If your organisation controls these settings, ask its administrator for help.

Check the connection and selected device

  1. Check that the microphone is connected and is not muted by a switch on the microphone or headset. For a wireless device, check its connection and battery.
  2. Open your computer's sound settings and check the input device. Speak normally and check whether its input level responds. If an external microphone is missing there too, reconnect it before returning to Delta.
  3. In Delta, use Refresh microphones to update the list. If the list could not be loaded, use its Try again button. Allow access if a permission request appears.
  4. Select the microphone you want to use. If your usual microphone is unavailable, reconnect it and refresh, or explicitly select another device or System default microphone.

The microphone choice is remembered separately in your browser and desktop application. Check it again if you switch between them.

Confirm that sound is captured

  1. Click Start the test and say a few ordinary words. Check that the Sound level meter responds.
  2. Click Stop the test, then listen under Play back the clip. A moving meter confirms sound activity; playback lets you check that it is the voice you intended to record.
  3. If needed, change the microphone and choose Run another test. When the sound is correct, use Back to return to your session.

This short test stays on your device and does not generate a transcript or report. The selected microphone is also used for your next session recording in the same browser or desktop application.

If the microphone still cannot be opened

  • Another application may be using the microphone exclusively. Finish any call or recording in that application, close it and try the Delta test again.
  • If the problem persists after checking permissions and refreshing the devices, close and reopen Delta or your browser once any recording has finished. Restart your computer if needed.
  • If Delta reports that microphone selection is not supported in this environment, note that message when contacting support.

Contact our team using the help block below if these checks do not resolve the problem. Include the exact error, your operating system, whether you use the browser or desktop application, and the microphone model. Do not include patient information or consultation audio.
